Bhutan counts the cost of trying to buy happiness

Filed in heightenedTags: ,

THIMPHU, Bhutan (Reuters) – They say you can’t buy happiness – and it’s something Bhutan is finding out the hard way.

The tiny, mostly-Buddhist Himalayan kingdom won a world voice for adopting a happiness index to measure its economy. But its prime minister says it promptly forgot its own lesson, and let a sudden rush of prosperity go to its head.

“Wealth creates increased desire,” Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley told Reuters in an interview in the capital Thimphu, surrounded by tree covered mountains dotted with prayer flags.

“There are families with four or five cars. There are luxury vehicles being imported that can hardly drive on our roads and are made for far better roads than we have here.”

A country that was closed to foreigners until 1974 and only recently opened up to the forces of globalization lacked the tools to cope with new-found economic growth and the wealth it brought.

Debt-fuelled consumerism that far outpaced economic output has now led, inevitably, to a rude awakening.

The government has cut expenditure and is considering raising taxes on imported vehicles. The central bank, the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, has rationed the main trading currency, the Indian rupee, squeezing private businesses.

Youth unemployment is over 9 percent and people are drifting away from the countryside, and traditional values, to the towns.

Worst of all, Bhutan’s most recent Gross National Happiness (GNH) index, in 2010, found only 41 percent qualified as “happy”.

BECOMING MORE MATERIALIST

“We have been moving away from GNH values and, like many countries, becoming more materialist,” said Thinley.

“When such tendencies come at a cost to the economy, like we are suffering now, the government has to take difficult measures,” he said. “We have to accept that the rupee is not our currency.”

Thinley’s Druk Phuensum Tshogpa government won power in Bhutan’s first democratic election in 2008 and heads to the polls again next year.

He said the crisis highlighted the need to focus once more on the happiness index, which uses nine criteria: psychological well-being, ecology, health, education, culture, living standards, use of time, community vitality and good governance.

“Our economic problems are the result of being opened to the world and being part of the globalization process.”

Despite its boom, Bhutan remains one of the world’s least developed and poorest nations, where 70 percent of 700,000 people live on subsistence farming. But economic growth led to a surge in imports of industrial and consumer goods from neighboring India.

Almost one in eight of the 65,000 vehicles on its roads were imported last year.

Thinley said the cost of importing fuel to keep these cars on the roads wiped out the earnings that Bhutan made from its major industry, selling hydro-electric power to India.

“The revenue we earn from exporting clean energy is the same as the cost for the dirty fuel that we import from India,” he said, sipping Bhutan’s traditional butter-and-salt tea in a timber-clad room dominated by portraits of Bhutan’s five kings.

HAPPINESS OR DEVELOPMENT?

But it seems to be getting harder to convince people to put a holistic sense of happiness ahead of raw economic development.

In parliament on Thursday the government forecast economic growth of 7-8 percent next year and said it hoped to reach its target of cutting poverty to 15 percent from 23 percent. The electricity grid covers 77 percent of the country.

“It’s sad but true that the roads we are building to take services to villages are the roads by which villagers leave and some set up shanty towns around the cities,” said Thinley, dressed in Bhutan’s traditional knee-length, belted robe.

He said the government must priorities policies that promoted the appreciation of rural life and stop the drift into urban areas, which was decimating villages and making the country more dependent on imported produce.

“In many ways, life in the rural setting is better and the possibility to find happiness is far greater than living in a city where you don’t even know your next-door-neighbor and violence is rising,” he said.

“We need to create a conscious desire in our people to continue to live in rural areas or move back from urban areas. Rather than live in a stuffy apartment, go back to the farm!”

It may be a hard message to sell to the young people heading for the towns, abandoning traditional dress for jeans, and looking for civil service jobs rather than manual work.

“People across Bhutan need to realize that we need to be more independent,” he said, “(relying) on our own farming and resources.”

Graduating SF State athletes ponder their next steps after college …

Filed in heightenedTags: , ,

The last out has been called and the finish line has been crossed. The next step for SF State?s senior collegiate athletes will be to move forward. Soon they must choose between pursuing a career in their majors or continuing on with the sports they have participated in for years.

Transitioning from a college sports career to life as a professional athlete is highly competitive. Studies show that most college athletes will not have the chance to play their respective sports professionally.

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, only 1 percent of college athletes are recruited at the professional level. Baseball is the only exception, with about 11 percent of student athletes recruited.

Most athletes at SF State are more focused on pursuing their majors rather than their sports. Former volleyball player Halimah Oswald, 22, will graduate with a degree in psychology. As a collegiate volleyball player, Oswald?s skills improved drastically, she said. While it was difficult for her to say goodbye to the sport, she is focused on becoming a psychologist.

The decision to put majors before sports is something that many graduating seniors still wrestle with. Some are lucky enough to make both athletics and academics work together. University alumnus Mark Tabuso trained competitively in kickboxing while studying kinesiology at SF State before graduating in 2001. While at the University, he realized that he could use his studies to get better at his sport so that one day he could make it into his career.

?In the ?90s when I was fighting, I was using what they were giving me as my training regimen,? he said. ?There was a lot more science that SF State provided for me.?

Now Tabuso owns FSA Fight Team, a mixed martial arts gym in South San Francisco. It took 10 years of working odd jobs before his dream could sustain him completely.

?There is a lot of setbacks,? Tabuso said. ?In a sport like this, a fight sport, it?s still a gutter sport. It?s not like people with a ton of money want to come in and train in this type of stuff.?

Many former athletes often stay involved in their sports through clubs, recreational programs and other active sport leagues. After graduating, SF State baseball catcher Matt Quintero plans to continue with baseball competitively through either independent leagues or the minor league system. Other athletes at the University have the opportunity to do the same utilizing recreational leagues like Sport4Good; a community-based program which organizes basketball, dodgeball and volleyball tournaments throughout the Bay Area.

Other organizations like Coaching Corps, Amateur Athletic Union and the YMCA provide another outlet to continue living in the athletic world. They also provide volunteer opportunities like coaching, mentoring and administrative roles as a way to run their programs and give former athletes a way to stay involved with their sports. SF State goalkeeper Mike McNeill hopes to take his experiences and build them into a career as a soccer coach, specifically in the college community.

City leagues also offer opportunities of employment for both continuing and graduating athletes. Heather Robinson, 36, who is now studying recreation, parks and tourism on the graduate level, went from playing collegiate basketball to coordinating the adult sports leagues in the East Bay. She never thought she would have a career in basketball, but she continued to be drawn to jobs that were sports-oriented.

?You got to be careful those opportunities don?t get ruined,? she said.

After graduation, all Gators will face the reality that life as a student athlete will come to an end. They will have to make decisions about their futures to determine how involved, if at all, they will be in a sport that has been such an important part of their lives.

Octave and Gnuplot Coming To Android

Filed in heightenedTags: , ,

New submitter MathIsTasty writes “Recently, it was announced on the Octave-maintainers list that a Kickstarter campaign has been launched to bring Matlab style numerical computations and graphing to Android via a ‘more than’ port of Octave and gnuplot. While I doubt it will be as successful as some recent games on Kickstarter, is this a reasonable way to fund free software development? Now, we just have to worry about people working on simulating solar irradiation while driving. Here is a good blog post about the project.”

Multitasking on the HTC One X isn’t broken, it’s customized

Filed in heightenedTags:

Multitasking

There's been a bit of fuss over the way the HTC One X (and One XL) handles multitasking, with some folks saying the phone is broken when talking about the way it handles tasks in the background. While it certainly is different than what we see on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, or other devices running previous versions of Android, it's not broken at all — HTC has just tweaked it. Like everything else in the Android source code, the way the kernel and system free memory from background tasks is wide open and subject to the whim of whoever does the software building. In this case, it's an area we're pretty familiar with, and something we've been hacking at since the days of the lowly HTC Hero — the minfree settings and kernel low memory killer.

What's happening is that the settings have been adjusted to keep more memory free for Sense 4 to gobble up, at the expense of applications running in the background. It's not a big edit, but with the One X's big screen and Sense 4's big footprint, it's a big enough edit to force things to close in the background more aggressively than we're used to seeing. Apps that have a bit of priority (ranging from the important things like the phone dialer to the less-important like the music player) seem to act just fine, but bigger applications, like Chrome beta for example, seem to suspend and need to re-open whenever they are returned to from the application switching menu.

For the more nerdly among us, I've looked and found one set of changes in the One X's boot image. The Stock AOSP build of 4.0.4 writes these values to the minfree settings:

8099, 10132, 12165, 14213, 16245, 20295

The AT&T HTC One X uses these settings (as we're using the system, anyway):

7746, 9720, 11694, 13742, 15715, 24709

Our Tegra 3 version of the HTC One X is showing the following, again, as we're using the system:

8192, 10240, 12288, 14336, 16384, 20480

It's very likely that there are other changes in the kernel source as well.

The real issue here is that it's different than what we're used to seeing. Many seem not to like it, and would prefer the "old way". If you're riding the root train, that's a possibility — our own Senior Developer Beezy is looking at things, and working on a few edits. If you're not into hacking your device, you're going to have to realize that HTC has built the One X their way. It's not wrong, it's just not stock Android.

Hearthstone Health and Fitness Opens Innovative New Business in …

Filed in heightenedTags:

Easton, Maryland
May 2012

Hearthstone Health and Fitness, Inc. (?Hearthstone?), the new fitness and wellness center in Easton, announces that it opened for business on May 21.

Hearthstone Health and Fitness has taken up residence at 102 Marlboro Avenue in Easton. Hearthstone?s owners, Dave and Martha Tuthill of Oxford, have transformed the former Blockbuster Video location into a state-of-the-art facility that will bring together the very best in exercise and nutritional science, fitness equipment and highly qualified expert staff. First and foremost, Hearthstone will provide a superior client commitment to deliver an integrated and complete wellness experience for the individual just starting his wellness journey to the elite athlete looking to improve their performance.

Dave Tuthill, Hearthstone?s President and CEO, was inspired to create Hearthstone following his own wellness journey. In 1991, Dave weighed more than 330 pounds. By 2011, he was down to 280 but now suffered from Crohns Disease and Type 2 Diabetes and was dependent on over 15 medications. Mr. Tuthill finally saw results in the winter of 2011 after working a science-based wellness program that integrated fitness, nutrition, his personal physician and his own knowledge growth. ?To date I have lost more than 70 pounds, no longer need insulin to manage my Diabetes and have made many positive changes in my life because I aligned myself with a team of professionals that were all aware of my goals and worked together to help me achieve them,? comments Mr. Tuthill. ?I realized there are so many people out there like me ? they want to be healthy and be an active participant in their own health journey. That?s when I decided to ?pay it forward? to those who need to find their way to better health and fitness by being part of a supportive, integrated and like-minded community.?

The Hearthstone approach takes a 360-degree look at all the factors affecting wellness: physical fitness, nutrition, balance and mental health. The company will be led by a seven-person management team that includes a Director of Fitness, Life Coach and Registered Dietitian. Hearthstone will also partner with many area physicians and guest medical professionals to provided a ?total lifestyle? concept to their clients.

Mr. Tuthill remarks, ?Many gyms employ non-degreed staff with a training certificate they got off the internet. At Hearthstone, we are putting a significant amount of resources into ensuring we employ individuals who have undergraduate and, in most cases, graduate degrees in exercise and health-related disciplines like exercise physiology, exercise science, physical education and kinesiology. All of our front-line staff are also credentialed from the industry?s leading certification organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the American Fitness Professional and Associates and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. And, unlike so many facilities, our staff have current certifications rather than just getting that certification once in their lifetimes.? Mr. Tuthill continues, ?the industry is changing so rapidly that keeping current on the latest science and latest techniques is critical to helping clients work smarter and more efficiently rather than just harder.?

Both Mr. and Mrs. Tuthill were clients of personal trainers, regularly, over the last 20 years with minimal and sporadic success. ?So often,? Mrs. Tuthill says ?the trainers are only focused on selling memberships and training packages to achieve their bonuses. Somewhere in that formula, the needs and goals of the client gets diminished or forgotten.? Mrs. Tuthill continues, ?At Hearthstone, our team is salaried. They are compensated based on their performance and customer satisfaction rather than how much they sell. This allows the team to really care about whether members achieve their targeted results. Measuring customer satisfaction is almost unheard of in this industry.?

The Hearthstone team will offer a wide variety of services from individual to group exercise training. Clients may also choose just to exercise on their own and the company will also provide support to those members. The Hearthstone philosophy stresses education and making informed choices. Clients may learn how to eat ?clean and healthy? from their Registered Dietitian and can also learn how to bust through success roadblocks with the help of their Life Coach. These clients can also participate in frequent medical lectures from local and guest physicians and learn the latest scientific trends in wellness care. Hearthstone also wants their clients to have fun and encourages the social aspect found in most public fitness settings. The company takes this a step further and will organize group dinner parties at local restaurants featuring healthy food options.

Hearthstone will also offer the best in traditional and innovative fitness equipment for the improvement of cardiovascular health, functional training and resistance training. Members and non-members will have access to state-of-the-art scientific tests such as VO2 Max, Resting Metabolic Rate, Spirometry and Body Composition featuring the industry leading BOD POD. These quality tests are normally only found in university and major hospital settings.

Clients may also purchase nutritionally-balanced ?meals and snacks to go? prepared in partnership with Mason?s Restaurant in Easton. These may be either pre-ordered or can be purchased from a rotating stocked inventory. All the meals are fresh, not frozen, and made from top quality ingredients. Hearthstone will also offer free ionized water and coffee to its clients.

Finally, Hearthstone will offer concierge services. Clients who want to eat healthy while traveling can have Hearthstone make their dinner reservations at restaurants featuring healthy food options. Hearthstone is a member of IHRSA and offers its clients a 50 percent day-pass discount on participating member clubs around the country. Similarly, local obstacles to exercise can be overcome through the help of Hearthstone?s talented staff.

Membership fees will be competitively priced starting at $60 per month with a one-time membership fee of $50. Periodically, Hearthstone will donate all or a portion of the one-time fee to local charities. Memberships are paid month-to-month with no long-term commitment. As Mr. Tuthill states, ?we want our members to WANT to belong to Hearthstone. We don?t want to have them frustrated at having signed a long-term commitment to a facility they no longer enjoy or that doesn?t support their individual goals. We succeed only when our clients succeed.?

Further information can be found on Hearthstone?s website at www.HearthstoneHealthandFitness.com or by calling the facility at 410.690.3838.

Canada?s Hesjedal loses Giro d?Italia lead

Filed in heightenedTags:

ASSISI, Italy ? Spanish rider Joaquin Rodriguez took the overall lead in the Giro d?Italia from Canadian Ryder Hesjedal on Tuesday after winning the hilly 10th stage with a sprint finish.

One of the pre-race favourites, Rodriguez finished the 186-kilometre leg from Civitavecchia to Assisi in four hours, 25 minutes and five seconds for his first Giro stage win. The Katusha rider is 17 seconds ahead overall from Hesjedal, with Paolo Tiralongo of Italy 32 seconds back.

?The goal is the podium and to fight for the Giro victory,? Rodriguez said. ?The last week will be super tough and you?ve got to race intelligently. … No matter what happens, at least now I?ve worn the only leader?s jersey missing from my collection in the three major races (with the Tour de France and Spanish Vuelta).?

Bartoz Huzarski of Poland was two seconds back in the stage. Italy?s Giovanni Visconti finished third, four seconds behind.

Hesjedal was only six seconds behind in sixth place, but Rodriguez moved ahead of him courtesy of a 20-second time bonus for the stage victory.

Hesjedal, who is from Victoria, was the first Canadian to lead the race.

The stage began at the port of Civitavecchia on Italy?s western coast, then crossed into Tuscany with a difficult finish in the ancient hill town of Assisi.

With four kilometres to go, there was a tough climb to San Damiano with gradients as steep as 15 per cent. Then after a brief downhill section, the stage ended in Assisi?s historical centre.

Boucherville?s Dominique Rollin finished 74th to move up seven spots to 143rd overall.

Christian Meier of Sussex, N.B., was 159th to drop one spot to 147th, while Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., finished 160th to fall one spot to 164th.

Frank Schleck, another pre-race favourite, struggled and finished 26 seconds behind Rodriguez to drop out of the top 10.

Filippo Pozzato withdrew before the stage after breaking a bone in his right hand in a fall at the end of Stage 9. Pozzato accepted responsibility for causing the crash, which resulted in a multi-rider pileup.

Stage 11 Wednesday is the race?s longest, a 255-kilometre leg from Assisi to Montecatini Terme (8:30 a.m., RDS; 9:30 a.m., RSE).

The race ends May 27 in Milan.

Lady Gaga Cancels Show In Indonesia After Protests

Islamic hard-liners worry that sexy clothes and dancing will corrupt youth.
By Gil Kaufman

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The "Americano" singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 "Born This Way Ball" show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and "vulgar" style could corrupt the nation's youth.</P><P>According to the <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/lady-gaga-cancel-indonesia-concert-093021436.html" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a>, a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation's moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world's largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Will Bring a 'Personal' Touch To 'Born This Way' Tour" id="vid:717952" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"She's a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil's child and that she will spread satanic teaching," said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/15/entertainment-us-indonesia-gaga-idUSBRE84E0HQ20120515" target="_blank"><I>Reuters</I></a>. "This is dangerous."</P><P>Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga's biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Our DIY Mother's Day Tea | the Creative Paige

Filed in heightenedTags:

May, 15, 2012 by paige

My husband?s family has started a tradition the last few years of having a Mother?s Day Tea for all of the ladies in our family. This was the 3rd year that we?ve had it and I was so excited to be able to fly to Denver to be a part of it. My Mother-in-law hosted the tea at her house and I was able to help her out with lots of DIY projects to make the tea extra special.

The theme of the tea party was ?pansies?, so we were all about flowers, flowers and more flowers. We had some terra cota pots that we wanted to use ? so we spray painted the bottom of them with chalkboard paint and wrote each ladies? name on the pot. They were able to take home their own pot with a pansy in it.

Mason Jar Salad, cloth napkin, Scone in a Pot & Name Card

Each lady also had a basket at their place setting (wire baskets from Dollar Tree). The baskets were filled with a cloth napkin, a mason jar salad (inspired by Pinterest) and a flowerpot scone. I didn?t get a great picture of the scone, but you can see it in the basket. The scones were absolutely delicious and baked really well in the pot.

Flowerpot Scones ? How to

1. Soak the pots in water for 30+ minutes

2. Find your favorite scone recipe. (We used this incredible cream scone recipe from Savory Sweet Life)

3. Spray the pot with non-stick spray.

4. Drop the dough into the pot. They don?t raise very much so don?t be afraid to fill them pretty close to the top.

5. Bake as directed by the recipe, but expect that it will take 10-15 minutes longer. Watch to see when the top is slightly golden.

6. Serve with Devonshire Cream and preserve.

?

Oh, and we drank tea. You have to drink tea at a tea party, but it?s really all about the food. And we ate. a lot. of. food.
