White House threatens veto of GOP’s highway bill

(AP) ? The White House is threatening to veto House Republican legislation to boost spending on roads and bridges, saying the bill doesn’t spend enough to strengthen the nation’s transportation system and weakens environmental and labor standards.

President Barack Obama’s Office of Management and Budget issued the veto threat Tuesday.

Among the White House objections are that the House bill would mandate that a permit be granted for an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. The Obama administration denied the permit last month but left the door open for an application for a new pipeline route.

The White House says the bill also eliminates transit programs that help metropolitan areas reduce congestion.
